Epworth Sleepiness Scale

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is a recognised screening tool used to measure daytime sleepiness and support the assessment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

 

If you're worried about how tired you feel during the day, think about the questions below. It may be helpful to ask a friend or family member to help you with your answers.

How likely are you to fall asleep in the following situations?

Choose one option for each:
 

0 = would never fall asleep
1 = slight chance
2 = moderate chance
3 = high chance

1. Sitting and reading
2. Watching TV
3. Sitting in a public place (e.g. cinema or meeting)
4. As a passenger in a car for an hour with no break
5. Lying down to rest during the day
6. Sitting and talking to someone
7. Sitting quietly after lunch (no alcohol)
8. In a car or bus while stopped in traffic
